Windows Data Recovery when you Accidentally Format a Partition

Q. For some unknown reason, my Windows XP machine is not booting. It returns an error message, which tells me to run Chkdsk. When I try to reboot in the safe mode, it gives me the same error again. I have many important and confidential files on my machine. If that data is recoverable, please suggest a good recovery software for getting back my data.

There is no need to worry. Stay calm, and make sure that you do not perform any further Read/Write operations on the hard drive. It is likely that the partitions in your hard drive have got formatted. A formatted partition might look to be in a very bad shape, but the situation in real, is not as bad as it looks.

Although the data from a formatted partition seems to be gone forever, in reality, the data is still present on the hard drive, and is recoverable, if you act wisely and carefully. All that you need is a good data recovery software, and another healthy PC, which you can use, to recover the data.

Disk Doctors Windows Data Recovery software is a professional software, capable of handling extreme cases of data loss. It lets you recover lost/deleted files from lost and formatted partitions. It is capable of tracing lost files, and also lets you save the scan information, of each Scan task that you perform. Try it Now!

First things first!
The first thing to do is to remove the drive from which you want to recover the data, from your PC, and connect it as a slave to another PC, where Disk Doctors Windows Data Recovery software has been installed. We can use this PC, to recover the lost/deleted data from the formatted drive.

This completes the first half of the recovery process, and the part that involves majority of the human effort. The second half of the recovery process is just as easy as reading this article. It just involves a few mouse clicks, and before you notice it, all your lost data would have been recovered.

6 simple steps to data recovery

Follow the simple steps given below, to recover all your lost data.

Step 1: Launch the application, either by double clicking the desktop shortcut, or by selecting the icon from the Programs list in the Start Menu. The Main window pops up, as shown in Figure a. There are three options provided. Select the Recover your data option.

Step 2: As soon as you select the Recover your data option, a new window displays the physical drives connected to the PC, and the processing modes, as shown in Figure b. Select a source drive and the processing mode to process the drive. The software provides two processing modes.
• Display default partitions- This option displays the partitions already present on the drive.
• Search for lost partitions- This option displays the lost or corrupted partitions of that drive.
Note: By default, the processing mode is set to Display default partition(s). This option can be changed, by clicking the Search for lost partition(s) radio button.

Step 3: You can use the Quick Scan or the Thorough Scan method, for finding the lost partitions, as shown in Figure c. Quick Scan does a swift search for the lost partitions, and hence saves time. Thorough Scan does a detailed search, and therefore is more dependable.
On clicking the Next button, the application analyzes the drive, and lists all the found partitions in the partition table as shown in Figure c.

Step 4: Once you click the Next button, a new window, to select the logical drive from which you want to recover the data, is displayed, as shown in Figure c. Select the logical drive, and click on the Finish button.

Step 6: Once the tree is formed, the final step is to restore the data to a safe destination drive. Select the files and folders you want to save, from the list, and save them onto the destination drive.
If you do not want to save the data now, you can save the scanned information into a file, using the ‘Save Scan Information’ option from the Tools menu. You can later use the ‘Open Scan Information’ option to open the scan info file, and recover data onto the desired destination drive. This reduces the tedious process of scanning the drive again for lost / deleted data.

Note: You can only Preview the recovered files in the Demo Version of the software. The Save option gets activated, once you buy the Full Version.
